“The Board Recommends Keeping the Orkla River Closed to Salmon Fishing in 2027
The Board of Orkla Fellesforvaltning has reviewed the fishing regulations for 2027 and recommends that the river remain closed to salmon fishing next year.
The recommendation follows the serious outbreak of disease this autumn and the results of the spawning fish counts, which show that the spawning stock has been severely affected.
Experience from the Gaula and Verdalselva rivers shows that the disease does not necessarily disappear after just one year. We also do not know how long it will continue to affect the Orkla, or how large a reserve of salmon remains out at sea.
Given the serious situation facing the spawning stock and the uncertainty surrounding the coming years, the Board believes that any further harvesting of salmon would be biologically unjustifiable.
The recommendation initially applies to 2027, but it may be necessary to keep the river closed in the years to come as well.
The matter will now be considered by the Representative Council before being returned to the Board for a final decision.
We will keep you informed as the process moves forward.”
